The Alchemist Accelerator, together with the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago, recently launched its first-ever deep-tech cohort, selecting 27 science-focused startups from nearly 400 applications. The chosen companies have a strong emphasis on advancing technologies in quantum computing, from hardware and software to algorithms and applications that leverage quantum capabilities.
Among the notable quantum-related firms invited to this cohort are AnharmoniQ, which is working on quantum hardware infrastructure; Quantum Research Sciences and QodeX Quantum, which are both honing in on quantum software and AI models built specifically for quantum systems; Qoro Quantum, developing network stacks suited for distributing quantum computing tasks; and quasi ai, a company that enhances simulations in fluid dynamics. There are also startups applying quantum tech in other fields, like Florence Quantum Labs which isexploring quantum biology for drug discoveries, and SQK INC, which is building hybrid quantum-AI solutions for medical imaging.
A key feature of this program is its partnership with IBM. The collaboration offers the startups working on quantum software cloud access to IBM’s quantum computing resources, along with technical support and opportunities for venture funding. The program will support seed-stage ventures working on customer validation and early market engagement. This effort has drawn founders from over 10 cities and five countries, underscoring how international the cohort really is. By bringing together talented people and cutting-edge tech, the program can help to boost the Midwest as a hub for quantum innovation, supporting regional efforts to turn specialized research into commercially viable products and ultimately help expand the U.S. quantum economy.
As for the structure, Alchemist Chicago is planned as a two-phase program that'll run starting late 2025. It combines the Silicon Valley-based expertise and network of the Alchemist Accelerator with the University of Chicago’s impressive research and entrepreneurial resources.
The focus is on early-stage companies, at pre-seed or seed, that are led by technical co-founders working in areas such as quantum computing, AI, cleantech, and robotics. The program provides mentorship, strategic partnerships, access to investor networks, and entrepreneurial training, along with opportunities to tap into student talent.
Organizers say the goal is to accelerate the journey from scientific breakthrough to tangible market application. Launching Alchemist Chicago is a significant milestone for our region’s landscape, energizing efforts to develop a sustainable quantum economy and creating a potential pipeline to turn cutting-edge research into scalable, real-world solutions.
