The latest batch of the Midwest Dairy Accelerator have been chosen, with six startups picked for this year’s second edition of the accelerator program run by the Midwest Dairy association. The lineup of businesses is one that really feels like it’s riding the current wave of consumer interest with innovation in protein, convenience, and ingredient transparency. The locations of the various business HQs is also representative of the region, with companies based in Chicago, Saginaw, Iowa City, and others.

Their products range from whipped cottage cheese dips to probiotic frozen yogurt, reflecting a pretty diverse set of innovations.

The businesses are:

Disco Cow (Saginaw, Michigan) - reinventing cottage cheese into delicious dips and spreads,

Drippy Dip (Chicago, Illinois) - creating a shelf-stable cheese dip made with cheddar and Monterey Jack

MOOJ Foods (Chicago, Illinois) - working on a higher-protein, lower-fat paneer perfect for everyday cooking

Pretty Cool Ice Cream (Chicago, Illinois) - leaning into premium dairy for its frozen treats

(P)RiND (Chicago, Illinois) - pitching a cheese-pop snack packed with 30 grams of protein

Yotopia (Iowa City, Iowa) - using frozen yogurt as a way to deliver probiotics

The program is a collaboration between Midwest Dairy and New-York based innovation advisory firm, VentureFuel and runs as a hybrid, ten-week bootcamp. According to the cohort announcement, the startups began their journey in late June. During the program, they’ll take part in workshops, and receive mentorship, and direct connections to key industry leaders in dairy. Topics covered during the program include understanding consumer insights, ingredient sourcing, manufacturing, distribution, retail strategies, marketing, and pitching their ideas.

"Consumers are increasingly looking for foods that deliver more: more protein, more functionality, cleaner ingredients and authentic experiences," Corey Scott, the CEO at Midwest Dairy told the Super Market Perimeter website, adding that the cohort was “showcasing the versatility and nutritional value of real dairy.”

Meanwhile Fred Schonenberg, Founder and CEO of VentureFuel said in the cohort announcement that “what's especially exciting about this year's cohort is how effectively these founders are using dairy to address some of the biggest trends shaping food today; from protein and functionality to convenience and clean label ingredients."

The final event is scheduled for September 16 at the Green Acres Event Center in Eden Prairie, Minnesota with a grand prize of $20,000, while the runner-up will snag $10,000.
