Milwaukee replaced its traditional Independence Day fireworks on July 3 with a drone show, making a shift in how the city celebrates the national holiday. The event took place over McKinley Beach, and aimed to deliver a “dazzling 45-minute performance” according to the county.
delivering a visually captivating and environmentally conscious alternative to the usual pyrotechnic displays.
The event involved some 90 drones and was organized in partnership with Northern Lights Drone Shows, a Wisconsin-based company specializing in drone spectacles. Milwaukee county said that the performance would launch in three waves, each lasting approximately 14 minutes. The orchestrated display included homage iconic local landmarks and explored patriotic themes, all synchronized to an original soundtrack specifically created for the show. The soundtrack was also made available for download, enabling attendees to fully immerse themselves in the experience.
Officials made clear the shift to drones was driven largely by practical considerations. Beyond cost, other officials emphasized the quieter and cleaner nature of drones, suggesting a commitment to reducing noise pollution and air contamination which are commonly associated with fireworks. "We can be our best when we provide opportunities to come together and create memorable experiences for future generations," Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said.
This year’s drone display also responded to the cancellation of last summer’s July 3 fireworks due to funding and logistical challenges. With these issues in mind, the drone show may promise a more sustainable, and future-ready celebration format. Viewing areas were set up along the lakefront, particularly at McKinley Marina and McKinley Park, and attendees had the option to reserve spots starting early in the afternoon with large crowds reported in prime vantage points.
The new format also incorporates safety and contingency planning, with a makeup date scheduled for July 6 in case of poor weather conditions. This added flexibility ensures residents would still be able to enjoy the event despite any potential challenges.
While fireworks have long been the hallmark of Independence Day festivities, drone shows might represent a fresh, high-tech, and quieter way to celebrate. For these reasons, it’s likely that we may see an increase in such initiatives across the country in the future.
