The U.S. Small Business Administration has launched a nationwide pitch competition with a $1 million cash prize pool, opening a new funding pathway for small businesses across Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin that have previously used SBA capital programs.

The Patriot Pitch Competition was announced earlier this week and is part of the SBA's "Freedom 250" programming tied to national 250th anniversary celebrations. Clover Network, a Point of Sale solutions provider is funding the full $1 million prize pool.

To be eligible, businesses must have utilized qualifying SBA capital products and be US citizens or permanent residents. SBA capital products typically include 7(a) loans, microloans, and 504 financing, though the SBA has not yet published the full eligibility list publicly. The agency said in the announcement that submissions will be judged on four criteria: strengthening American competitiveness, demonstrating outsized impact within an industry, delivering economic opportunity and quality jobs, and showing strong fundamentals and execution readiness.

The competition takes place in four stages of judging, narrowing to a finalist group that will pitch live at a one-day event in Washington, D.C., in September. The competition guidelines provide the prize pool as being delivered as $400,000 for first place down to $75,000 for 5th.

"This nationwide contest will award … prizes to small businesses whose innovation, grit and leadership are helping build America's next great era of strength, prosperity, and competitiveness on the world stage," SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said in the announcement.

Takis Georgakopoulos, co-president of Clover’s parent company Fiserv said that Clover's sponsorship reflects "the spirit of innovation, fierce competition, and American ingenuity."

Beyond the cash prizes, the SBA said that the Washington finals event will include a supplier matchmaking expo connecting small businesses with larger corporate buyers and federal contracting opportunities, alongside networking with investors and policymakers.

For Midwest small businesses, the matchmaking component may carry weight comparable to the prize money itself. The region's SBA district offices in Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis serve thousands of borrowers each year - a sizable applicant pool, many of whom qualify to submit an application.

Applications are open until June 10 at sba.gov/freedom250.
